There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:
- He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!
- He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.
- He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha.
- He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a chauffeur or security personnel around him.
- Although he owns the world’s largest private jet company but he never travels by private jet.
- His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis. He has given his CEO’s only two rules. Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder’s money. Rule number 2: do not forget rule number 1.
- He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time is after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch television.
- Bill Gates, the world’s richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet, so he had scheduled his meeting only for half hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.
- Warren Buffet doest not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk.
His Advice to young people: “Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself and remember:
- Money doesn’t create man but it is the man who created money.
- Live your life as simple as you are.
- Don’t do what others say, just listen to them, but do what you feel good.
- Don’t go on brand name; just wear those things in which you feel comfortable.
- Don’t waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on them who really in need rather.
- After all it’s your life then why gives chance to others to rule our life.”
This is an interesting story, after reading it I was like stunned on his perspective towards life. It was an interesting aspect of life by one of the most influential people in the world, Warren Buffet. Despite being the second richest man in the world, his lifestyle is just like any other ordinary man. Having such a high status doesn’t affect him at all, he still lives the way he is since young. For him, nothing has changed at all. Spotlights, fame, wealth etc isn’t important to him at all. Being rich isn’t going to solve every problem, sometimes there are things that money can’t buy. Money can really show a person true side, literally it’s the root to all problems, people are willing to do anything for the sake of money, whether is it good or bad, its definitely powerful at times. It’s quite surprising that most of these famous people started out by themselves as in, they didn’t have much education at all, look at Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and our Mr. Sim, the Creative owner. They didn’t have a good education background yet they achieved so much in life. Many students or rather people compared to them saying that why do we have to study till our hair turn white, look at these people, they made it without having studying so hard, some of them even skip lessons. I guess this is the most practical path in life, how many people can actually make it, considering that the world is so competitive now, so many things are already being invented and technology is so advanced right now. So after all, education is still the foundation for success which is why our parents keep stressing that it is important to have good education and I guess that’s about it. Warren Buffet also mentioned that “don’t waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on them who really in need rather.” I felt this is true because kids nowadays tend to spend money on branded goods and buying stuffs that they just feel like it. Influence also plays a part because when they see some of their friends wearing expensive stuffs, they want to follow. Just buy thing that you really need and not just buy it for sake of buying it.
Anyways, it is the last week of school and soon I’m going to have my 2 weeks break which I definitely need it. A rest would be good. Time flies, 8 weeks in Ngee Ann have been fun, learning a lot of new things, comparing to secondary school, it’s totally different. Being independent is important because we have to take down notes and arrange them ourselves whereas in secondary school, we’re being spoon fed by our teachers and perhaps that’s the difference between a lecturer and a teacher. I guess that’s the way of life when we move towards tertiary education and also we are adults because we are paying the adult bus fare which is really very expensive. Oh wells, that’s the next phase of life and as years goes by, the amount of experience and things I’ve learnt is going to be priceless as I continue this long journey moving my education status to the next level. Let’s just hope everything goes smoothly. Although during the 2 weeks break, there are rather many assignments to be completed, but I still can’t wait for the break to start. After all, I just need a breather, a rest is much needed. FSV is stressful but also rather fun at times.
There’s a double-edged sword in this post, because you’re admiring Buffett for the things he says about how money is irrelevant, yet you admire him because he has billions of dollars. Would CNN interview and would you quote the other billion people who believe the same things as he, but don’t have his wealth?
