Whether is it going home or going out, I will always walk through the side gate where a security guard will be stationed there. While observing him, I noticed that he actually take pride in his job, he will greet anyone who pass by the gate “Hello, How’s your day?” he asked me and I told him “I’m fine, thank you.” Everyday without fail, he will report at his desk near the side gate to make sure that everything is alright.
During the weekends, there will be a lot of guests visiting; He will just lead them to the blocks around my estate as some of them are unfamiliar within the area. When help is needed, he will go the distance to make sure that everything is done and fine. On his desk, there are newspapers, radio, magazines and a file. Except the sign in/out file, the rest are items that will keep him occupied during the long hours guarding at the side gate.
There will be times where his daughter will visit him during the night while he is doing his night shift; it was a touching moment to watch. The daughter brought supper for her dad trying to keep her dad awake until the next morning where his partner will take over, so he can get some rest. His daughter will usually stay until 11.30pm so that there will be enough time for her to take the last transport home.
Being a security guard isn’t easy at all, considering the fact that you must be well-built, strong, good physical appearance. All these are just physical aspects, the mental part is even tougher, long hours, going the distance to help the residences or guests living in the estate. They may look simple, but when it comes to doing it, it is definitely not easy. During my observation, I realized that due to the time shift, he do not have much time to spend with his family. He works everyday only at different time slot. It must tough on him, missing his family will definitely be a factor.
I guess the next time I walk pass him again, I will have a small chat with him or rather give him some words of encouragement. I hope that the residence living in the area will realize how tough the job is and perhaps give him a smile, or saying “Hi” will definitely brighten up his day giving him the mental strength to carry out his duty.
This is overdependent on your past knowledge of the security guard. It’s much less an observation of the person at one point in time.
